Rights
On August 26, 1789, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was adopted in France. It was a historic moment for the country, as the Declaration stood against monarchical tyranny and affirmed fundamental rights that those in power were required to respect. The principle that the weak must be protected against the abuses of the powerful was thus established. Human life possesses an intrinsic dignity, regardless of a person’s wealth, power, social class, origin, or religion.
This understanding of rights could also be considered in relation to peoples oppressed by colonialism, faced with powers seeking to exploit the resources of others. One of the important principles emerging from the Declaration was the right to resist injustice. Yet this principle was difficult for those in power to tolerate when it challenged their authority.
Duties
Rights also entail duties. They represent a responsibility that must be assumed by people who consider themselves free, independent, and autonomous. It is a responsibility that must be upheld every day in order to advance equity and justice.
Fulfilling this duty is essential to ensuring the effective implementation of rights. For whenever rights are neglected, injustice can quickly regain ground. However, this task cannot be accomplished effectively without unity and solidarity.
That is why financial support is also essential. As we say in Madagascar: “We seek money and have the courage to spend it.” It is therefore imperative to allocate resources to defending inalienable rights and protecting those who are vulnerable.
