When Journalism Becomes a Target, Democracy Pays the Price.

 

The growing pressure on Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham and filmmaker Rachel Szor has raised serious concerns about press freedom and the protection of fundamental rights.

The two came under intensified scrutiny after their documentary NAZA received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since said his government would seek legislation allowing citizenship to be revoked from Israelis who “defame” Israeli soldiers abroad, explicitly referring to the filmmakers. The proposed measures have not become law.

The situation has also moved beyond political rhetoric. Protesters gathered outside Szor’s family home, while the offices of Sicha Mekomit and +972 Magazine, which have published Abraham’s investigations, were reportedly entered by activists.

 

For international press-freedom organizations, the issue is bigger than one documentary. It is about whether journalists can investigate governments, militaries and other powerful institutions without facing intimidation, legal retaliation or threats to their safety.

 

The Committee to Protect Journalists and 10 partner organizations have called on Israeli authorities to protect Abraham and Szor and their families, arguing that journalists must be free to report on matters of public interest.

For any democracy, protecting journalists is not about agreeing with their reporting. It is about protecting the public’s right to know.
